A MODEL UNIT

 

Teaching English Language Arts to

Elementary Gifted, Talented, and Creative Students

Who Are Learning English as a Second Language

Although the following unit is based upon content selected for average third-grade students, it may be non-graded and used with teacher discretion for average, creative, talented, or gifted students.

Commonly, units are comprised of a series of multidisciplinary lessons centered around a theme such as a holiday, famous person, special event, or any number of other concepts and subjects. Diagrammed, a model unit would look like the following one, with various modifications.

ENGLISH CONTENT SUB-MODEL

Language Arts

Drama

Speaking – Listening – Sentence Structure

Creative/Critical Thinking – Reading - Literature – Vocabulary

Spelling – Penmanship – Grammar – Mechanics – Usage

A complete multidisciplinary unit may incorporate the objectives listed in the next section. They were taken from the Bilingual, Gifted, Creative, and Talented Curriculum Guide and used in a unit on winter holidays.

All components of language arts cannot be taught in a single unit. The teacher will select ones that need to be taught or reviewed or ones that are crucial to the implementation of the specific unit. For a week’s unit on winter holidays, the following English skills have been chosen from the sub-model:

speaking

listening

creative/critical thinking

reading : literature

sentence structure

composition

mechanics

usage

spelling

vocabulary

drama

The skills chosen for this unit will be repeated in other units. According to need, some lessons will be taught in special concentrated sessions that are not necessarily theme related.

mechanics/handwriting

The teacher will demonstrate and have student write sentences about the theme, using new words and observing rules of English as taught by the teacher. See specific content area column.

The student will answer simple questions in English.

The teacher will lead student into responding to a story read by the teacher.

The student will perform simple dialogues in English.

The teacher will demonstrate and help the student dramatize short student-selected segments of stories students has read.

The teacher will take student on tour of Media Center and help him/her locate and check out a book on the theme.

The teacher will provide models of good handwriting, using the district-adopted handwriting book and instructional television.

After discussion and involving students in this unit, the teacher will demonstrate and lead students into writing original holiday literature: poetry, short story.

Social Studies The teacher will instruct the student about how to produce a map showing the location of his/her native holiday/activity.

Art The teacher will arrange for students to make individual holiday decorations to be used in a cooperative exhibit.

Music The teacher will lead students into brain-storming procedures for performing and taping a collection of holiday songs in English and in their native tongue.
